The Cotton family - charged with annoying several generations of TV viewers

The Norfolk Blogger highlighted that Fearne Cotton is related to Bill Cotton. Well, there are/have been two famous Bill Cottons. Wikipedia says of Billy Cotton senior (1899-1969):

His son, Bill Cotton, later became BBC's head of variety. He is related to TV presenter Fearne Cotton, as his son Bill Cotton Jr. is a cousin of her grandfather.

So, the full TV crime charge sheet for the Cotton family is:

Billy Cotton Bandshow - the most annoying, eye-poppingly grating programme on Friday nights in the sixties which started with a shot of Billy Cotton senior's wide-open mouth (pictured) as he shouted: "Wakey Wakey". You could see his tonsils - his mouth was open so wide - it filled the whole screen - it was awful. This commencement used to have our family screaming with irritation and sprinting for the ITV switch (there were only two channels in that day - imagine!).

Bill Cotton Junior's decisions at BBC Television - which included "Are you being served?" and "It ain't half hot Mum".

Fearne Cotton - hyperventilating "Are you nervous?" interviewer of the Princes etc etc

However, Bill Cotton Junior gets the Cotton family off the hook, I think, because he was also responsible for Monty Python's Flying Circus, Morecambe and Wise and the Two Ronnies. And Fearne's not that bad. My daughter likes her.

Case dimissed.

  1. I think I'd rather spend 30 minutes in the company of Robert Mugabe than Fearne Cotton.
